CHALLIS, ID – On a recent Saturday morning, a homeowner noticed paint blisters forming on the wall of his modular home. The man was home with wife, daughter and granddaughter when he realized there was a fire in the home’s wall. The family quickly took action by calling the fire department, shutting off the breakers to the furnace, knocking a hole in the wall, and spraying the flames with two portable fire extinguishers. They were able to prevent the flames from spreading until the fire department arrived to completely extinguish the fire. The Challis Fire Chief told reporters that “he pretty much saved the trailer with his fire extinguisher.”

SOUTH PASADENA, CA – A South Pasadena resident is being credited with putting out a fire that had ignited in her home before firefighters were able to respond. The South Pasadena Fire Department was called to the apartment complex just before 11:00 pm. When they arrived at the scene, they found that the apartment’s resident had used a portable fire extinguisher to put out the flames. Fire investigators determined that the fire was ignited by wax dripping onto a heater.

ST. LOUIS, MO – A University of Missouri–St. Louis College of Nursing student is being credited with saving her neighbor’s apartment and two dogs after she discovered a fire in their kitchen. She was alerted to the fire by the apartment’s fire alarm, but when she went to check on the apartment, she learned that her neighbors weren’t home. After calling 911 and contacting the neighbors, she was able to get into the apartment and use a portable fire extinguisher to put out the flames. She found their two dogs hiding in an upstairs bedroom and worked to clear smoke out of the room until fire authorities and the homeowners arrived.

COLDWATER, MI – The Coldwater Fire Department was called to the Old Mill Race Apartments after a plumber accidentally ignited lint in the building’s mechanical room dryer while he was soldering a copper pipe. Firefighters told reporters that the plumber used a portable fire extinguisher to put out the flames before they spread. Damage was limited to burnt insulation and lint in the mechanical room ceiling.

DOVER, DE – A maintenance man is being hailed as a hero in Dover after he put out a fire in an apartment complex, saving four children. While the cause of the fire is not known, it started just after 1:30 p.m. in an apartment. As soon as the building’s maintenance man was alerted to the fire, he used a portable fire extinguisher to put it out. After extinguishing the fire, he learned that there were four children in a room that was adjacent to the where the fire had started. No one suffered any injuries as a result of the fire.

ROGUE VALLEY, OR — Days before Thanksgiving, a Medford woman was on her way home for the holiday when she was involved in a head-on crash in Utah. The woman was trapped in her car as it caught fire. A Utah resident passing by jumped into action and extinguished the fire using a portable extinguisher from his car. The Good Samaritan stayed with the women for three hours until paramedics arrived. Due to the actions of the Good Samaritan, the woman only suffered injuries from the crash.

LAKE TAHOE, CA – Lime, one of the nation’s largest electric scooter companies, pulled thousands of its scooters off the streets since this summer after discovering that a small number of them may be carrying batteries with the potential to catch fire. In one recorded incident, the Lake Tahoe Fire Department was called to the company’s Lake Tahoe facility after a scooter burst into flames. Luckily, an employee was able to use a portable fire extinguisher to put the flames out long enough to move the scooter to an empty parking lot.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – A quick-thinking Good Samaritan put out a car fire in Fort Lauderdale by using a portable fire extinguisher from a nearby Walgreens. Witnesses say they saw a car burst into flames while it was traveling down the middle of the roadway. A bystander pulled up next to the car, ran from his truck to the Walgreens to grab a portable fire extinguisher, and the used it to put out the fire. Other Good Samaritans who were nearby worked to remove the driver from the car, while the man put out the fire.

SAN ANGELO, TX – About 25 people had to evacuate from the San Angelo City Hall after a toaster oven in the basement caught fire. Three fire crews were dispatched to the City after the incident was reported. Ultimately, the fire was put out by a portable fire extinguisher before the fire crews could arrive. There were no injuries as a result of the fire and the only damage was to the toaster and a scorch mark on the cement wall.

LEBANON, OR – A Lebanon teenager is credited with stopping a kitchen fire in his home after a pan of grease caught fire. The boy’s mother has started cooking on the stove, but went outside and lost track of time. She then realized that there was smoke coming from the kitchen and ran back inside to attempt to halt the flames by putting a lid on the pan. After the mother was unsuccessful in stopping the fire, the teenager used a portable fire extinguisher to put out the flames.
